Thirty plus year Old Mountain House Chili and Beans

Well today, I am playing human guinea pig.  I have opened a can of Mountain house Chili and Beans that would have been packed in the early 1970’s.  It had been stored under less than ideal conditions.  The last 10 years or so it has been in a conex with summer temperatures exceeding 100 degrees.

You can tell the age of the can by the style of the label.  Upon opening the can, the contents appear all right.  No strange odors or colors.  The beans are still soft to the touch.  After adding water and letting it reconstitute I tasted tested it.  The taste is not bad.  I don’t know how much the taste would have changed over the years, not having tasted any back then.  But it is surprisingly good.  I would eat it in an emergency without any hesitation. Add a little hot sauce and onions and it is quite palatable.

I suspect that it has lost a fair share of its nutritional value over the years. It should have been rotated years ago.  But it would fill you up and provide calories.  If this can had been stored under ideal conditions, I suspect it would be just like new.  I am very impressed with Mountain House Products.
