Taste Test of Dehydrated and Freeze Dried Foods part 4
This has been an interesting experience. Unfortunately, it does not provide an easy answer to the question of who has the best tasting foods. Every company had something that tasted good to someone. The scores that were given were an average of the scores made by the five panel members. The higher the score the more panelists liked it. I think it is safe to say that if the panel gave it a score of 5 or higher the food was acceptable. It would have been nice if we could have said buy from company X their foods tastes the best, but we couldn’t.
Some of the items were complete meals, some were components. Personally I store way more components than complete meals. The foods my wife fixes usually suit us better.
Even the highest scoring items had someone who was not happy with it. As a result, I think there are several things you should take into consideration when you purchase foods. Taste, nutrition, price and size of servings are the main considerations.
Take a good look at the size of the serving, I had two #10 cans of corn, one had twenty serving the other forty, but both cans were approximately the same weight. One had ¼-cup servings and the other ½-cup servings. Consider the calories per serving. The higher the better.
Take a look at the ingredients, is it real meat or TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein) a soybean product. Me, I want real meat. Where are the ingredients from, I avoid foods from China. How is the food packed, be sure the oxygen is below 5%, preferably below 2%.
Look at the track record of the company, how long have they been in business. Some companies have been around for many years, some are new. I have seen companies come and go and so has some of their food. One company that is no longer with us had food start failing in only a few years. I buy from companies that have been around for years and have good solid reputations.
Now I know this does not answer all your questions, take a good look at the results and the ones with the highest overall scores we thought were the best tasting. And before you buy from a company ask lots of questions and if they can’t or won’t give you good answers run, there are others that will
